The presentations begin with “Spiky and Flat: Why Local Recruiting is Critical in a Flat World”. John Sumser, Founder and CEO of the Recruiting Roadshow, describes critical changes in the Labor Market that offset the trend towards a flat world. The material is a logical follow-on to last year’s Multigenerational Recruiting presentation.

“Next Level Strategies for Creating a Next Level Workplace” is Jeff Kay‘s contribution to the proceedings. Get a birds-eye view of the best practices your competitors are using to woo and retain employees. Jeff runs the world’s largest single site Recruiting Office as the CEO of Kaye/Bassman International. His presentations are always full of energy and useful guidance.

There wouldn’t be a contemporary Recruiting Industry without the work of Hank Stringer. Founder of two major online Recruiting ventures (Hire.com and itzbig.com), Stringer is one of those visionaries who can’t keep the dirt out from under his fingernails. Hank’s presentation, Elements of Excellence in Search Relationships, is his latest take on the Recruiting Landscape. He promises to deliver a list of things you should expect in any excellent Recruiting relationship.

The final piece of the puzzle is an offering from Dennis Smith. (Dennis is also the host of the Dallas Roadshow). Dennis built his career using out-of-the-box thinking. He is one of the leading voices in the world of Recruiting Blogs. He will share his experience using “Advanced Social Sourcing Tools”.

It was fantastic to see so many Recruiters who are hungry to learn and improve their work. Continuing education is hard to find in our industry. The Recruiting Roadshow project is designed to create networks that help Recruiters bootstrap each other.

I opened the morning about a half hour late. An unexpected downpour, combined with the  summer road construction season in Minneapolis, created a traffic problem that held many people up. Once we got going, the day was packed with information and experiences.

The networking exercise, which simulates keyword searching and team building, demonstrated the idea when people clump together, opportunities increase. It was a good segue into my presentation about the shifting demographics in America. (Here is a copy of that material).

George LaRocque briefed us on the results of Bullhorn‘s interesting RecruiterIQ initiative.

Joel Kramer, the editor of MinnPost.com gave an impassioned speech about the importance of journalism. He opined that newspapers were the best source of journalism and that that was an essential part of our government. When the newspapers decay (as they are), the opportunities for journalists (real journalists) to keep their jobs declines. This creates a risky situation where the checks and balances disappear.

Steven Rothberg spent about an hour explaining the way that College Recruiter helps its clients.

Don Ramer closed the morning with an intense multimedia presentation that described the obstacles and opportunities facing recruiters. Emerging from a legacy in the real body business of the 18th and 19th Century, Recruiting has had trouble shaking off its roots. Even the term "Human Resources" contains disturbing implications of the idea that one person might own another. Ramer went on to illuminate the possibilities for transformation and global impact.

If headed North on I-5 :
Take the Greeley/Swan Island exit (just past the Rose Quarter). This puts you onto No. Greeley. Follow it up the hill to the Village site.

If coming from 405 North to I-5 North:
While crossing the Fremont Bridge, stay in the right lane of the 2 lanes that enter onto I-5 North. When on I-5, take the first exit, Killingsworth, and follow it around to the left. It turns into Going Street. Go through the first light and get in the right-hand lane. At the bottom of the slope watch for a sharp right turn marked “To No. Greeley Avenue.” Go right and take the next right onto Greeley. Follow it up the hill to the Village site.

If headed South on I-5:
Take the Swan Island/Alberta exit. At the light, continue straight through it, staying to the right, and continue south to Going Street. Turn right onto Going. Go through the first light and get in the right-hand lane. At the bottom of the slope watch for a sharp right turn marked “To No. Greeley Ave.” Go right and take the next right onto Greeley. Follow it up the hill to the Village site.

When you are nearing the Village on Greeley Avenue:

As you near the village on Greeley,
You will see the black and green color blocks on our bldgs to your left, and then you will see the red, blue and yellow buildings on your right. You want to drive past the red, blue, and yellow buildings and turn right just past the yellow building (intersection of N. Greeley and N. Sumner Streets). This will lead you to visitor parking behind the yellow building and you will proceed to the front desk just inside the yellow building. Let the front desk know you are here to see me. They will give you a badge and send you over the sky bridge.
